Littleover, Derbyshire

Spotlight area

Although it’s very much a part of Derby, Littleover’s residents still enjoy a village lifestyle with a strong sense of community, while still benefiting from their close proximity to the city centre. In short, it offers the best of both worlds.

Situated three miles south west of Derby city centre, Littleover has grown from a tiny agricultural village into a fully-fledged suburb of the city. However, with the remnants of that ancient settlement at its heart, Littleover has retained its own identity which makes it one of the most desirable locations in Derby. Around the old cottages, church and pubs that date back centuries, impressive Victorian houses were built in the late 19th century, while in more recent decades it has become home to spacious modern properties, some of which have stunning designs and features. A full range of local amenities make Littleover an ideal location to raise a family, or to enjoy the quiet life in a friendly neighbourhood setting.

What are the locale amenities like?

In amongst Littleover’s generously proportioned properties are several parks and playing fields, which help give the village its open and spacious atmosphere. Its two oldest pubs date as far back as the 16th century, and the village has a growing number of characterful independent shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. Royal Derby Hospital is part of the village, and Littleover is served by good schools for all ages, from infants and juniors through to sixth form, including a very good special needs school. Being part of the wider city of Derby, Littleover offers access to all the major supermarkets, DIY outlets and cinemas. It offers excellent road and rail links to the rest of the Midlands, London and the North.

What are the area highlights?

The area around St Peter’s Church and the mock Tudor White Swan pub is particularly beautiful, and these remnants of Littleover’s heritage help give the place its unique character even today. The pub is a centre of community life for many, as is the nearby Littleover Methodist Church which includes a popular café, function rooms and a sports hall used by many in the village. Each summer, Littleover in Bloom goes from strength to strength. Being in Derby, residents benefit from the city’s key attractions such as the museum and art gallery, cathedral, the historic mills on the Derwent, Darley Park and the old market.
